1. Is Ubuntu Apps associated with Ubuntu or Canonical?
No, Ubuntu Apps is completely separate from Ubuntu Apps and is not affiliated or endorsed by Ubuntu or Canonical in any way.

2. You used the Ubuntu logo in your book.
The Ubuntu logo was used by permission from Ubuntu / Canonical.

3. Why are you giving the PDF version away for free?
Like many authors, I’d like my work to be known. I’m giving away the PDF version for free in hopes that the word will be spread.  Some of you may want to have the convenience of
the print book which I’m offering for a modest fee.

4. Can I share the free PDF version with others?
Absolutely, you are encouraged to share the e-book with others as long as it is free of alteration.

5. Where can I post a correction or application suggestion?
Simply go to the contact page and email it to me.

6. When will the next book update be available?
Most likely within a year or two unless a significant number of applications become available, then sooner.

7. Is Ubuntu Apps free of copyrights and open source?
No, the book is copyrighted material and is not open source or free to modify. The PDF is free to use and redistribute but not free to change from it’s original form.

8. Why are some applications left out of the book?
Most of the applications listed in Ubuntu Apps are GUI based applications that Windows users would be comfortable with or find interesting. If you feel that an application should be listed in this book, feel free to email it to me on the contact page link.

9. Are you encouraging people to switch to Linux from Windows?
No, Ubuntu Apps is not about converting people to Ubuntu Linux but is about showing  just how fun and easy Ubuntu can be. Ubuntu may work great for some people, while Windows or Apple based systems may be great for others. In the introduction of Ubuntu Apps some of the pros and cons of Ubuntu are described.

10. Is Ubuntu better than other operating systems such as MS Windows?
Ubuntu is stronger in certain areas while Windows is stronger in other areas. The view taken by Ubuntu Apps is that there is no one best OS. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. The book focuses on showing both the strengths and weaknesses of Ubuntu while featuring only the best applications.

11. What sort of tips are featured in Ubuntu Apps?
The sort of tips featured in Ubuntu Apps are ones that people moving from Windows would expect. For example, running Ctrl + Alt + Delete in Windows loads the task manager while in Ubuntu it does not by default, so I show in the book how to fix this. Some other things included are how to get the trash can to appear on the desktop, how to have icon screenshots for your office documents so that when right clicking on the desktop, they are visible.

12. What sort of customizations are shown in the book?
Ubuntu Apps shows how to install a Mac OS style theme and a Windows Vista style theme to make it look like these systems. Also included in these things are how to get Screenlets or ‘Widgets” to appear in Ubuntu. To make it look like OSX, Ubuntu Apps shows how to install and customize the “dock bar” so that it looks like the OS X one with the stacks fan look.

14. What does the MS Vista style theme look like?

15. What is the “Stacks Fan” thing?
The “stacks” thing is something that Apple introduced in OS X. It allows files and folders to be shown in a quick pop up from the menu. The “fan” is the vertical appearance of the items. Ubuntu Apps shows how to do the same thing in Ubuntu Linux.

16. Are Getdeb.net listed applications included in Ubuntu Apps?
Yes, for applications not listed in public software repositories such as those on Getdeb.net, a fix has been found that allows Getdeb.net listed applications to be installed just as you would using “apt-get” or using “Synaptic”.

17. What makes Ubuntu Apps listed applications different from a simple application list?
The application list in Ubuntu Apps is a intelligent list, not just a list.Ubuntu Apps shows screenshots of each application, lists the project page, and installation name (whenever possible).  When combined with the software source locations for the applications, a listed application can be installed simply by using apt-get or Synaptic without ever having to visit the project page.

18. Have all of the applications listed been tested and personally installed?
Yes, all of the applications listed in this book have been personally tested and installed by the author, Kevin Prag. All applications listed in this book are known to be installable and working.

19. Are all of the applications listed in the book open source?
Many of the applications listed are open source, but not all are. Some have proprietary or non open source licenses. However, they all are freely available.

20. Are Windows based programs included in the book?
Yes, by using the Linux application, WINE, some programs can be installed in Ubuntu. There are several Windows based applications that are listed in this book.

21. Some of the screenshots look familiar to the ones on the project pages.
While many screenshots were taken directly after installing, some screenshots were provided directly from the application project pages to best show the functionality of the application.

22. How can I install all of the applications listed in the book easily?
A simple script has been provided in the book that will allow all applications to be installed easily. A link to the script is provided in the book.

23. What does the print version of Ubuntu Apps look like?
Great question, below are some screenshots of the actual book.  The book is produced on publisher grade white paper with black & white interior ink. The outside cover features a full color glossy paperback.

24. Why is the print book only available from online stores?
In order to offer the most up to date information available as quickly as possible, Ubuntu Apps is available as a POD (print on demand) book. As a result, you will most likely not see Ubuntu Apps sitting on a book shelf inside a store. However, once ordered it only takes about 24hrs for the book to be printed and shipped out.
